    • Obit: Gospel Witness, March 1908
"Bro. Jacob Steinmann was born in Bavaria, Germany, and emigrated to this country while yet a young man; died near Gridley, Ill., Mar. 3, 1908: aged 82 y. 9 m. 3 d. He was united in marriage Sep. 7, 1862, with Mary Augsberger (nee Esh) who preceded him to the spirit world Feb. 22, 1892. To this union were born ten children, two having preceded him in death, leaving four sons and four daughters, two step children, 23 grandchildren and one brother to mourn his departure. Deceased was a member of the A. M. Church. Services at the house by Bro. Geo. Summer from Psalms 46 and at the church by Bro. Daniel Orendorff from II Cor. 5:10 and Bro. D. W. Slagel from Isa. 38:1."

“They must have been employed at Josephenburg near Karlskron (65 miles northeast of Breitenbrunn) at least briefly. Karlskron was the parish and district that encompassed Probfeld and Josephenburg, two Donaumoos villages that held Amish Mennonite Ackermann, Gascho, Güngerich, Hage, Ingold, Oesch, Springer, and Sutter families.

The Karlskron Familienbuch contains an entry for the family. It describes Jakob as someone born on or coming from the Rinkweilerhof estate, and Barbara as someone born on or coming from the Illbacherhof estate. It gives the month and year of their marriage, though not the place. It also lists three sons with birth dates but no birth places (suggesting they were born elsewhere). An extra note says that they were mit Pachler Josephenburg with Joseph Pechler/Pachler/Pacher and Katharina Ingold. After 1836 they worked for Daniel Unzicker on the Stoffersbergerhof estate at Stoffersberg (adjacent to Landsberg am Lech, 6 miles north of Unterdiessen, 30 miles east of Breitenbrunn).”

From Helmuth Gingerich: Mary Ann's July 2014 article - do you refer to her statements on page 200/201? Though both these Steinmann and Augsburger families ended up on Birky-Landes cemetery, their relationship is less close than one might expect, at least from paternal side. Jacob Steinmann born 1825/1826, second husband of Daniel Augsburger's widow Mary Oesch, died 1908 in Gridley. That Jacob had a brother Daniel (1.oo Catherine Birky 1834-1974, 2.oo Catherine (Wise) widowed Staehly). Birthdates of Jacob and Daniel Steinmann match with children of Jacob and Barbara (Nafziger) Steinmann. No birthyear of their father Jacob found in Bavaria, it seems most likely that Jacob Steinmann (1802-1865), buried in Elm Grove, is father of Jacob and Daniel, even more as Jacob Storemen, 58y, is listed in the 1860 household of Daniel and Catherine (Birky) Steinmann.

The Augsburger genealogy of Daniel Augsburger, first husband Maria (Oesch) Augsburger, re-married Jacob Steinmann, is verified.

The Augsburger genealogy of Jacob Augsburger, married to Barbara Steinmann isn't. All I have is a close birthday to the one of Noah and Elisabeth (Eyer)'s son. [1, 5]
