Mrs. Magdalena Dully, Morton township’s oldest resident, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lena Birkey here this morning (Thursday at 4:05
a.m., at the age of 96 years, three months and 26 days. Mrs. Dully suffered a paralytic stroke several days ago from which she never recovered.
„Grandma“ as she was known to everyone, had enjoyed unusually good health in her span of life and friends had predicted that she would easily
reach the century mark. The stroke came suddenly, however, and she was was unable to talk. Death came quietly in the early hour, to end many
years of commendable service to humanity. Magdalena Wageman Dully was born at Hermansburg (correct: Hermersbergerhof), Germany, on December
13, 1839, and passed away at Morton April 9, 1936. She was the daughter of Henry Wageman and Catherine Eichelberger. She was united in
marriage to Michael Dully at Pekin December 10, 1867. Mr. Dully passed away in January, 1929. She came to America in a sail boat with her parents,
and it took 35 days to cross the Atlantic. When the boat reached New York, the passengers were not allowed to land as there was an epidemic
of small pox. After three days they were allowed to land and Mrs. Dully delighted in relating the sight which greeted her eyes. President Lincoln
had been shot a short time before and a huge funeral procession was being held in New York City. Mrs. Dully came to Morton, when there were
only two stores in the town. Most of her life was spent in this township and in Groveland township, where her husband was engaged in Farming.
After the death of her husband she came to Morton, living with her children, Mrs. Lena Birkey and Joseph Dully here. Surviving are the following
children, Mrs. Kate Klein, Mrs. Anna Krug, of Groveland; Mrs. Mary Stormer of Mackinaw; Mrs. Lena Birkey and Joseph Dully of Morton and
Mrs. Elizabeth Thielbar of Pekin. Two children preceded her in death. Three brothers and one sister also preceded her in death. Mrs. Dully, in
spite of her old age, was kind and considerate to her family and her host of friends. She was a good neighbor, a friend whose friendship lived with
the many years, and was beloved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her friends, and in her children’s homes. She celebrated many
happy birthdays, with friends calling throughout the day to congratulate her, and it was a memorable event in the life of the community each year.
In December she was the honored guest at a Masonic celebration and took part in the festivities of the occasion. She was a long and faithful
member of the St. Paul’s Evangelical church. Funeral services will be held at the home of Mrs. Lena Birkey Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. and at the
Defenseless Mennonite church at Groveland at 2 p.m. Burial will be made in the church cemetery
