      Peter Zimmerman was born in Ohio, Dec. 15, 1842; died at the home of his son Edward in Garden City, Mo., May 5, 1931; aged 88 y. 4 m. 20 d. On Feb. 26, 1865, he was married to Magdalena Slagle of Tazewell Co., Ill., who preceded him in death July 3, 1921. They spent over 56 years in wedded companionship. This union was blessed with six children, two of whom died in infancy. Those surviving him are William and wife Leah, who have 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson; Edward and wife Martha, who have 5 children and 2 grandchildren; Lydia and husband with 6 children and 2 grandchildren; Jonathan and wife Elizabeth have 3 children and 1 grandchild. These with a host of relatives and friends are left to mourn their loss. He was laid to rest beside his helpmate in the Harmony Cemetery. Services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph D. Helmuth, and at the Roanoke, Ill., Church Thursday afternoon, May 27, 1931. He united with the A. M. Church in his young manhood and was a member of the same at the time of his death. He was ordained to the ministry in 1878 at the Roanoke Church, in which capacity he served for over fifty-one years – including the congregations at Larned, Kans.; Garden City, Mo.; Delaplaine, Ark.; and later returning to Roanoke, Ill., where he remained until the last six years which were spent with his children in their different homes.

      Pioneer Mennonite Minister Of Roanoke Died May 5th At Garden City, Mo.

      The body of the late Rev. Peter Zimmerman, for fifty years a minister in the Mennonite church and for many years spiritual director of the church near Roanoke, was brought from Garden City, Mo. To the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Helmuth in Roanoke and final services were held there and at the Roanoke Mennonite church last Thursday afternoon in charge of Rev. Ezra Yordy of Eureka and burial was in the Harmony cemetery beside the grave of his departed wife.

      Rev. Zimmerman was born in Ohio Dec 15, 1842, and died at the home of his son, Edward, at Garden City, Mo. May 5 1931, in his 89th year, where he had been making his home the last several years.

      He was untied in marriage Feb. 26 1865, with Miss Magdalena Slagle of Tazewell county, who died July 8 1921. To this union six children were born, two dying in infancy. The surviving children are William of Carthage, Edward of Garden City, Mo. Mrs. Lydia Helmuth of Roanoke, and John of Calome, S.D.

      Deceased was ordained to the ministry in 1878 at the Roanoke church. He served in this capacity in the local field and at Larned, Kan., Garden City, Mo. And Delaplaine, Ark., for full fifty years. His death is mourned by all who knew him.

      Besides the many local people attending the funeral services were the following: Mr. and Mrs. William Zimmerman, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hull and Mrs. Edward Martin of Carthage; Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmerman and daughter Pearl of Calome, S.D.; Daniel Helmuth and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Zimmerman and son of Garden City, Mo. Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Albright and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Springer of Princeton; The D.W. Slagel family and children Emma, Edna, and George, Mrs. Alma Eigsti, Mrs. Lucy Gingrich and Aaron Slagle, all of Flanagan; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gasho and daughter Bessie of meadows; Mrs. Lida Gasho, Mrs. Mattie Thewlis and daughter and Mrs. Irvin Sauder of Washington and Mrs. William Thewlis of East Peoria.
